AVID LLC Announces Increased and Rapid Computational Power: Meet “Boyd”

PRESS RELEASE, April 17, 2007

Blacksburg, Virginia, April 17, 2007 - Meet “Boyd”, AVID's new eight-node, 32-processor, Linux cluster in it's Yorktown office. This computer cluster was purchased from PSSC Labs in California and was named to honor John W. “Jack” Boyd. Jack Boyd is a former mentor of both the President Sam Wilson and CTO Paul Gelhausen of AVID. “Jack's approach to developing people who care about their work, and his love of America, NASA, Ames, and the work he does are truly things that should be recognized today!” said Wilson “Jack was born in Danville, Virginia, graduated from Virginia Tech, and has made it his life work to provide a place where people can accomplish great things.”

This powerful computer cluster will be used to support several of AVID's aircraft design projects, including its Bomb Damage Information-Micro Air Vehicle (BDI-MAV) project for the Air Force and enable AVID to make computations of advanced control effectors that can significantly improve the controllability of future micro vehicles. Additionally, this system will also be used to perform optimization studies of advanced concepts. With a cluster as quick and powerful as this one, large multivariable optimization problems can be investigated using the following:
  • genetic algorithms

  • response surface

  • finite-difference

  • gradient-based techniques.

AVID's aircraft design tools, such as ACS and OAV, are well suited for the multi-processor environment. Also, this system enables AVID to run CFD studies in-house that would have required supercomputers in the past. AVID has a close relationship with NASA and is utilizing many of the CFD programs that NASA makes available for industry to use.

AVID LLC provides aircraft design consulting services and produces several aircraft design and analysis software tools. Providing aerodynamic design expertise and software support, AVID LLC serves military and commercial sectors. Current projects focus on unconventional concepts, unmanned air vehicles (UAVs), manned aircraft, fan blades and wind turbines. Founded in 2001, AVID LLC has offices in Blacksburg and Yorktown, Virginia. Customers include Honeywell, Boeing, AAI, DARPA, NASA, DRS, Orbital, U.S. Army, and the U.S. Air Force.

Software design tools include AVID OAV for modeling and simulation of ducted fan vehicles, AVID ACS for modeling and simulation of fixed wing vehicles, AVID PAGE for rapid geometry definition, and AVID SPOT for evaluating sensor and aircraft performance.
